Content Marketing on a Shoestring

Content marketers, bloggers, and influencers are often working with a small to medium-sized budget and many with no budget at all.  Those of you on a shoestring budget, fear not; there is a way to build your influence and market yourself without tons of cash laying around.

Content Marketing on a Shoestring: Expert Tips

1. Know evergreen SEO optimization.

What makes evergreen content, and better yet what makes SEO evergreen content?  A few factors do, like your article format, keyword optimization, and general approach to copy. The term evergreen is used to describe content that is SEO-driven, continually relevant, and remains fresh for readers.  In general, this material is sustainable and everlasting.  Formats to follow:

  • “How To” Instructional Videos
  • Tips
  • Lists
  • Product Reviews
  • Current Releases
  • Testimonials
  • Frequently Asked Questions
  • Industry Resources

2. Don’t just share on social, collaborate.

It’s easy enough to pump out social media posts until your heart is content, but ensuring your content reaches an audience is not so easy with paid ads taking over organic social media growth.  One of the best ways to outsmart the system is to collaborate with fellow influencers and content marketers on a group post.  Your post will go out to your followers, and the audience of anyone else included in the collaboration.  So, gather 50 influencers to comment on a topic and share the quotes in a nice visual, and ask those 50 influencers to share the post with their audiences.  Your reach will increase 50 fold!

3. Social causes are mutually beneficial.

We all want to feel like active, useful members of society doing good in the world.  Maybe running an NGO is not your thing, but contributing to one or partnering with one in your own way is a very good idea.  You can give back to a cause greater than yourself while receiving free publicity.  How does this work?  Offer free sponsored posts to a cause close to your heart in return for PR and awareness of, well, you!

4. Get camera ready.

I’m not talking about your DSL-R or iPhone camera.  Videos are all the rage.  Researchers have found that colored visuals increase people’s willingness to read a piece of content by 80%, but these video stats are indisputable:

  • 51.9% of marketing professionals worldwide name video as the type of content with the best ROI.
  • Using the word “video” in an email subject line boosts open rates by 19%, click-through rates by 65% and reduces unsubscribes by 26%.
  • In July 2015, Periscope users were watching 40 years’ worth of videos every day.
  • Syndacast predicts 74% of all internet traffic in 2017 will be video.
